Telefonica signs up for 5G research with Huawei

It’s a proven path: operator + vendor agree to jointly evaluate and research 5G technologies. The vendor gets the kudos or working directly with an operator, and also the benefit of direction and input from a potential customer. The operator gets a chance to influence research directions, and also glimpse fully behind the curtain on vendors’ labs.

The latest partner onto the section of Huawei’s 5G dance card marked “operators” is Telefonica, with the two companies signing an MoU to work together on evaluating and developing 5G technologies.

Telefonica joins the likes of China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, KT, LG U+, NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone on Huawei’s dance roster.

The two companies signed a strategic co-operation on 17 November, with Telefonica Group CTO Enrique Blanco and Huawei’s head of Wireless Product Line David Wang writing their names down in ink.

Telefonica appears to be pushing out its 5G R&D efforts, recently investing in a 5G lab in its “home” market in Spain.
