Impressions of 5G at MWC Review: what do we know now we didn’t know before?

Mobile World Congress closed on Thursday with most attendees coming away with 5G etched on their brain. So how exactly has MWC contributed to our fuzzy knowledge of the next-generation? ‘Inside5G’ asks, and answers, the key 5G questions. But more importantly we ask, what do we know now that we didn’t before the event? When? Let’s start with the easy one (if we ignore “pre5G” and “5G enabling” technology launches in the interim). The wide consensus is that this will be…

5Qs on 5G: With NGMN

Image Credit: Chinamobile ‘Inside5G’s ‘5Qs on 5G’ series is back and it comes courtesy of Philipp Deibert of NGMN, just after the association has released its much-discussed White Paper at the Mobile World Congress. So there’s no better time to catch up with the NGMN Alliance to find out exactly what they’re all about. What is the main purpose of your involvement in 5G? The NGMN Alliance is an industry organisation of leading world-wide Telecom Operators, Vendors and Research Institutes and…

Bell Labs President Rejects 5G Hype

Marcus Weldon, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm Bell Labs has suggested the talk of 5G which is swarming this year’s Mobile World Congress is irrational and ‘ridiculous marketing.’ “it’s based on nothing. We like to say it’s about the digitisation of everything, people and machines” ‘We pride ourselves as being the most rational’, he said, speaking to Mobile World Live. ‘Everyone now expects the bar in 5G to be 5Gb/s, but it’s based on nothing. We like to say it’s…

Huawei Say It’s Time To Discuss 5G NOW

Huawei’s deputy chairman and acting CEO Ken Hu has put pressure on the industry to push forward towards 5G in the wake of suggestions that it is too early to talk about the next-generation network. At Tuesday’s Mobile World Congress keynote, Qualcomm’s Steve Mollenkopf echoed the views of 5G cynics when he argued ‘we don’t need to make a huge technology jump when LTE is providing some of this already’ – but the Chinese company does not agree. “Everything we…

Europe Want To Avoid 5G War

EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger has warned that Europe will ‘not stand a chance’ in the race to 5G unless authorities aid the continent’s drive towards the next-generation network and suggested co-operation, rather than competition, is the way forward. Having already been criticised for sluggish movement with regards to 4G, the EU will be looking to cooperate with China, Japan and the USA (having already signed an agreement with South Korea) as it aims to help companies catch up in the…

And then there were eight: Huawei and Mitsubishi join DOCOMO 5G trials

Huawei is the latest vendor at MWC to have released details of 5G trials with NTT DOCOMO. Huawei and NTT DOCOMO will collaborate in field trials of 5G Radio Access Technologies as they hope to validate foundational radio access technology for future networks in Japan in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games. The trials will investigate possible air-interface technologies, with a focus on sub-6GHz spectrum as well as mmWave technologies and techniques such as massive MIMO and full…

DOCOMO and Nokia achieve 2Gbps speeds in mmWave trial

DOCOMO is boasting data transmission speeds higher than 2Gbps at Mobile World Congress after the Japanese operator linked up with Nokia to trial mmWave technology at the 70GHz band. The downlink speeds were achieved in a joint indoor lab trial using an access point and equipment with 1GHz bandwidth, deploying PHY and MAC software enabled beam tracking. The pair are planning an outdoor trial later in the year as both look to press ahead with next-generation networks. ‘Utilising higher frequency bands…

5G at MWC: a preview of who is doing what in 5G at MWC

Like it or not, and many don’t, 5G is going to be a major theme at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. Time will tell if the demos we will see will be justified headliners or merely attempts to be seen to be doing something relevant to 5G. But with the event just days away, ‘Inside5G’ takes a look at what 5G demos and news we can expect to see at Mobile World Congress. Gathering of the clans – industry bodies…

Nokia to showcase working 5G radio equipment at MWC

Nokia Neworks has announced that it will be coming to the Mobile World Congress with a bag full of 5G tricks including two working prototypes of new radio equipment, Internet of Things security and an LTE-M demo with Korea Telecom. The Finnish company will be showing off ‘5G radio equipment’ operating on new millimetre and centimetre wave bands to achieve high capacities, and incorporating new frame structures to achieve single-digit millisecond latency. The idea that much lower latencies require much shorter frame lengths…

5G race picks up speed with Millimetre Wave Solution

Xilinx and BEEcube believe they have shortened the race to next-generation networks after they delivered ‘the world’s first millimetre wave prototyping platform solution for pioneering development of 5G applications.’ The duo are calling it ‘a complete ‘out of the box’ solution addressing the 60GHz backhaul market’ and claim it will enable the modelling of innovative mmWave designs immediately. It also looks like the technology will be demonstrated at MWC next month. “the introduction of this mmWave prototyping solution fills a huge…
