Mobile Edge Computing used to support live tests of assisted driving

Continental, Deutsche Telekom, Fraunhofer and Nokia Networks say they have demonstrated communication between vehicles via the LTE cell network with latencies of less than 20 milliseconds. The companies carried out demonstrations of assisted braking and co-operative overtaking using Mobile Edge Computing technology to site application software on compute platforms co-sited at LTE base stations. For the demos, a section of the Deutsche Telekom network was equipped with “cloudlet” MEC technology from Nokia Networks, and upgraded with position-locating technology developed by Fraunhofer ESK. Kumu Networks trials full duplex in Deutsche Telekom 5G trial

Deutsche Telekom’s 5G innovation “space” 5G:haus has been having a look at full duplex technology from Kumu Networks, and it appears to like the look of early results from the trial. Full duplex technology, which uses interference cancellation algorithms to transmit and receive in the same channel, is often mentioned as a potential  enabling technology for a 5G radio that could operate at much faster speeds.
