5GIC details 5G architecture for context-centric networks

Architecture proposes new protocols to enable “always sufficient” user experience. 5G may require a “disruptive”, revolutionary cellular network architecture, according to a report released by the UK’s premier 5G research institute, 5GIC. 5GIC has outlined the capabilities of a new network architecture – termed the Flat Distributed Cloud (FDC) architecture – in a white paper released yesterday. The paper states that the new architecture is intended to provide the foundation for context-aware networks that provide a user experience that is…

It’s too early for Europe to get defensive on 5G, Mr Commissioner

Surely it’s too early for arse-covering on 5G? We’re not even at the early standards stages of 5G, so it’s a bit premature to press the “don’t panic/actually do panic” switch. Yet there are signs of twitchiness at the European Commission, given its public summons of leading operators to discuss what can be done to get a move on with turning Europe into a 5G wonderland. As there has been no official statement, beyond that interestingly targetted leak (by whom?) to…

Future Social Network Service is ETRI’s vision for 5G

Korea’s research institute ETRI posted a useful release last week listing out key enabling technologies that it says are the results of its 5G R&D. You can read it here. Notable is the mix of short range device-to-device tech, new radio tech (full duplex, MIMO, mmWave), small cells, a mobile edge platform for vehicles and backhaul for high speed vehicles. It bundles all this up into a concept it calls “Future Social Network Service” (Future SNS). It says that “future…

ITU’s 5G gap analysis think tank gets extended remit

Will focus further on softwarisation, ICN and slicing. An ITU body formed to find gaps in 5G standardisation is to keep on working on new problems, having delivered its initial report on 5G technology. The body, known as ITU-T Focus Group IMT 2020 has been looking at network aspects of IMT-2020, spending six months looking at gaps in the standardisation process related to 5G. It focussed on areas such as “softwarization and slicing, emerging technologies, end to end QoS and a number…

Latvia wants to leverage Nokia relationship to be 5G leader

Latvian operator LMT thinks it could be one of the first operators globally to launch 5G services, by exploiting its relationship with its vendor supplier Nokia and an investment model it used to roll out LTE. LMT’s Chairman Juris Binde told a conference of the Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association that the model could even be of use in other markets. “Even though the introduction of the 5G network is several years away, LMT has developed an innovative 4G…

NTT says it is pushing on with real world 5G tests

NTT DOCOMO has released a few details of trials of 5G enabling technology it has been carrying out in real world environments. The two most recent trials it announced, taking place in October and November, were: A mmWave (70GHz) trial it conducted with Nokia Networks at a high-rise complex in Tokyo, achieving ultra-high-speed data transmission in excess of 2Gbps. The opeator said that it was the first 5G data transmission in a commercial complex, such as a shopping mall, due…

ITU agrees to put 5G frequency band allocation on agenda

The ITU’s WRC-15, its four-yearly spectrum harmonisation forum, has agreed that its next meeting, to be held in 2019, will allocate specific bands for 5G mobile network use above 6GHz. It further agreed that its 2019 meeting would add further agenda items for 2023. There is likely to be considerable information sharing and trading going on well before 2019, however, as vendors and operators will want certainty on certain bands in the microwave ranges well before 2019. The first 5G…
