Huawei and Telefonica deepen 5G cooperation with CloudRAN and core focus

Huawei and Telefonica, already partners in 5G R&D, have signed a joint agreement to cooperate on the development of next generation Radio Access Network (RAN) and core network technology. A statement from the companies said that 5G Core architecture evolution and research on CloudRAN would be the major cooperation areas. Specifically the companies will look at CloudRAN, User-centric “no cell” tech, re-architecting the core and Massive MIMO innovation. “No cell” technology is the term Huawei gives to the virtual RAN – whereby…

ZTE joins Huawei with “all good” results from China’s IMT-2020 tests

ZTE has said that tests of high frequency radio access and “massive MIMO”, carried out for China’s IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, have all gone as expected. 5G spec process starts for real at 3GPP meeting in Busan

Today is the last day of a five day meeting being held in Busan, South Korea. The meeting, of the 3GPP’s RAN Working Group one and officially numbered 3GPPRAN1#84, has seen around 400 delegates gather together to develop specifications of next generation radio network and air interface technologies. SK Telecom says 28GHz trials go well

SK Telecom said today that tests of equipment operating at the 28GHz mmWave band, carried out since August 2015, had gone well. The company has been testing base stations in the frequency, along with a test mobile device within a vehicle since August 2015, based on test equipment from Samsung. Researchers achieve “world record” spectral efficiency with massive MIMO

Researchers at Bristol University and Lund University have demonstrated 128 antenna MIMO that has achieved very high spectral efficiencies, and could be significant for 5G radio interface design. A press release from Bristol University claimed that it had achieved a spectral efficiency – expressed as bits per second per Hertz – of 1.59Gbit/s in a 20MHz channel.
