5G race picks up speed with Millimetre Wave Solution
Xilinx and BEEcube believe they have shortened the race to next-generation networks after they delivered ‘the world’s first millimetre wave prototyping platform solution for pioneering development of 5G applications.’
The duo are calling it ‘a complete ‘out of the box’ solution addressing the 60GHz backhaul market’ and claim it will enable the modelling of innovative mmWave designs immediately. It also looks like the technology will be demonstrated at MWC next month.

‘5G will increase cellular network capacity by a factor of 1,000 and the use of mmWave frequencies is critical to address the growing need,’ said Dr. Bob Brodersen, chairman of the board at BEEcube. ‘Existing tools for prototyping at mmWave frequencies are very limited and do not offer good integration. With no competing offerings in this frequency range, the introduction of this mmWave prototyping solution fills a huge gap as companies race to prototype 5G systems.’

Sunil Kar, the vice president of wireless communications at Xilinx, said that the two companies would continue to collaborate to help their mutual customers address evolving backhaul needs for 5G. ‘This solution provides the key features and capabilities customers need to accelerate development of next-generation wireless solutions,’ he said.
The integrated baseband platform connects to two 60GHz wide-band transceivers and phased-array antennas, enhancing performance due to the increased absolute frequency range and channel bandwidth. The point-to-point 500MHz mmWave modem includes features such as adaptive modulation and bandwidth, high-performance LDPC FEC, adaptive DP and automatic frequency recovery and supports speeds up to 3.5Gbps in single polarisation mode.
